Packer's Westy - November 2022 Beer of the Month
This month’s recipe is one from a longtime KJ customer. We tried his West Coast IPA at a brewing club meeting in September and were blown away. We knew right away we had to brew it ourselves and share it with everyone else. It has a great balance of hop aroma and flavour, along with a light but crisp malt expression. It’s a throwback recipe to the original IPA style with lots of good clean bitterness punctuated with pine and citrus hop notes. The Cali ale yeast ferments it clean and well.

Am I Right, Ladies? - Hazy Wheat IPA Recipe
This is the first beer that Dana has ever developed, and like last month's Jean Claude Van Darn Good Belgian Ale, the Am I Right, Ladies? began with a name and resulted in a delicious BOTM. This phrase is something she says a lot on stage while "performing" her "comedy," and while it's mostly said to ease the tension of a joke that may have landed poorly, this Hazy Wheat IPA with an ABV of 5.9% will likely do the same if you drink enough of it! As a nod to her budding (read: fruitless) career in comedy, we've used WB-06 Weizen (Get it? Wise Guy?) yeast for this recipe, and with Vic Secret hops at center stage, this brew bears a tropical and juicy punchline. Take the fruitiness one step further by adding 2oz of peach flavouring at the bottling and/or kegging stage. We're confident that this won't be a one-liner, am I right ladies?

West Coast Best Coast
West Coast Best Coast is our return to the roots of IPAs. This one is big, chock full of both bitter hop and flavouring hop additions. It has a strong malt backbone that balances out the strong hoppy flavour. Clocking in at 6.5-6.8% ABV and with 60 IBUs – it’s a big beer. So put down that juice bomb and come back to the OG IPA Style.

HAZE | Citra Pale Ale Recipe
We LOVE hazy IPAs here at KJ, and we’re not alone. More and more breweries are making super juicy, hop forward beers. Hell, we have 3-4 recipes that are all like that. One thing all of these delicious hazy beers have in common is their high ABV. They tend to range from 6.5-8.5%, but sometimes you simply don’t want a beer with that much booze in it. Enter HAZE, designed and brewed by our very own Jeremy Morris. HAZE has the same super juicy, hop forward notes of NEIPAs but in a sessionable package. Registering in at 5.3%, it is just that bit lighter from its bigger hazy brothers.

Honey Juice #9 | NEIPA Recipe
This is our “house” New England IPA. The grain bill is set in stone and we tend to just tweak the hops and yeast based on availability of ingredients. The finished beer always ends up being hazy without being too opaque, and it bursts with citrus and tropical fruit hop flavours. Finally, the addition of the honey malt gives it a delightful, sweet finish. We’ve been handing this recipe out to people all year looking for a new NEIPA recipe, but we figured it was time to make it legit and turn it into an official Beer of the Month.

Our original Beer of the Month for March 2021 was something different, but that recipe needs a little more refining. Enter, the Super-Sub – this one we have had in our back pocket for a couple of months now and we’re very excited to be sharing it. This recipe is Jeremy’s take on an English IPA.

Magnetic Balls
Featuring a couple of exciting new hops that have recently arrived, this is one hell of an IPA. The Strata and Sabro hops add a distinct orange, citrus, and tropical fruit flavour. This beer is bursting with flavour but is well balanced by the IBUs and light malt profile. We’re using a special yeast from Norway to really enhance the hop flavours and aroma. We tested this recipe with a few different yeast strains and Arset Kveik was far away the winner.

3rd Time Lucky | Beer of the Month October 2019
This is a beer we have been trying to make a long long time. Our initial efforts were all (delicious) failures. Even though they were double IPAs, we found them way too bitter. Finally, we figured out the solution to the bitterness problem. Once we sorted that out, everything else fell into place. This is a big, bold IPA that has tonnes of fruit forward hop flavour with just the right amount of finishing bitterness.

Pinecone Punch
We’re pleased to announce our first guest Beer of the Month! This wonderful recipe comes from the gentlemen at Farmhandbrewing (their Insta is @farmhandbrewing). Ben and Connor have been shopping at KJ for a while now and have become very dedicated brewers. We’re very pleased to be able to offer one of their recipes!
Pinecone Punch is a hop forward, slightly malty IPA. It has big notes of pine, and citrus balanced with the smoothness from the crystal malt addition. It is big, boozy, and hoppy, but deceptively smooth and easy drinking too. We enjoyed the hell out of it when we tried it, and we know all of the hop heads who shop with us will too!
